Where Do I Start with Sequential Spelling

Used by schools as well as homeschoolers, Sequential Spelling is AVKO's premiere seven-level spelling program. It is designed to teach the patterns of English spelling within seven normal public school years. Many homeschoolers complete all seven levels at a much faster rate.

This series is not based on grade level curriculum but on the mastery approach. Sequences of words build from easy words to advanced words in the same word family. For example, starting from the word "all", the student would learn all, tall, stall, install, installment, installation. Most students would benefit by starting at Level 1. If you have an older student and wish to determine if Level 1 will be too easy, please try the rough placement pre-test. It will help you to place your student at an appropriate level.

Who can use this program?
• Anyone needing to learn how to spell.

At what age can a child start?
• A child can start sequential spelling when they can read at a grade 2 level or after they have a solid introduction to phonics. If they know what sound each letter makes and can make a solid attempt at spelling a word phonetically, they can start Sequential Spelling 1.

I have an older student. What level should they start at?
• Most students benefit by starting a Level 1. You can determine where to start your student by giving them the rough placement pre-test. It will help you to place your student at an appropriate level.

For a more detailed placement in Sequential Spelling, you can use the Evaluation Tests that come after every 40 lessons in each level. This will help you to determine if there are specific word families your student needs to work on, even though they might not need the entire level.

How long will it take to complete the program?
Each level contains 180 lessons with 25 words each. This is roughly one lesson per day for a traditional school year. Many home schoolers complete all seven levels at a much faster rate. If you really want to proceed quickly, you can get through two to four levels in one year. Since there are twice as many days in a regular year (2x180=360) with an extra five (for good behaviour), you can complete two levels in one year with just one ten-minute lesson every day, seven days a week. If you do two ten-minute lessons every day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, you can get through four levels in one year.

Do not feel badly if you choose to only do one level per year because that is all your schedule allows. The important thing is to be consistent and to keep moving forward.
